This month I mainly worked on my a project with a partner. We took four 6x6in pieces of wood and painted them black, we then put painters tape all over them in a design. After we did that we took acrylic paint and put it over the boards in a pattern. We let them dry and then pulled the tape off revealing the pattern in black, once that was complete we wrote words inside the black that relate to our school. A challenge that we faced in this assignment was the tape was very wide so we had to cut it in half. In the beginning we didn't plan on putting words in the black lines but we collaborated with our class and got help and they suggested to do it. The other projects I’ve been working on is watercolor. I started by making fruits and trying to use other colors and water that you wouldn't expect to see in that type of fruit to create a gradient. I then made my last watercolor by starting off making a sunset but I didn't like the way it turned out so I decided to draw something inside instead. The pink reminded me of the spring and summer so I drew a flower and the blue made me think of the ocean so I drew the ocean floor in it.

During the month of February I worked on Embroidery. I went off of a picture that I found online of cactuses. I changed some of the colors as well as changing the type of stitch that I did. For the most part I did a satin stitch but for some parts I did a back stitch. For one of the plasts I did a chain stitch and for one of the other ones I did a french knot. From trying so many different stitches I was able to develop my skills better. Some difficulties that I faced were on the back the string would get tangled but I solved the problem by either going back through the stitch and untying it or cutting it, tying a knot and starting a new stitch. In the beginning I made one of the pots black but I didn't like the way the colors clashed together so I cut across the string and pulled out all of the black string and redid it with a grey one. Overall I really enjoyed doing this project although it took a very long time to complete.
I can’t believe we’re already halfway through the year! During the past 2 months I have worked on a lot of independent work. I first made a starry night one and when I started with it I wasn't happy with it and I solved the problem and went back to it and made it look more realistic. I took a risk when doing this because I didn't know how it would turn out. The next one I made was a picture that said “let it go” I really liked doing this project because I was able to create the background the way I wanted to. Next I made the turtle on and this one is my favorite because I took the most time on this and really focused on the lines to make them clean. My classmates helped me on what to draw on the empty spaces in the middle on the shell and we collaborated together to find out what would fit best. The last one I made is the purple snowing painting. I made this one at home and my parents were helping me on how to make it the best it could be. I developed my skills during all these painting because I haven’t been that confident in painting but this helped because I did so many that it improved my skills. Over the past month we have worked on many projects. I have made original art by drawing a picture of my cousin while looking at a picture I took of her. I also made a colored pencil along with other mediums flower drawing. The last piece of art I made was a starry night sky painting. When creating my portrait I felt conflicted on what I should add so I asked the class what they thought and they helped me through it. We were also able to observe everyone else's painting and get critique from everyone in the class when we went around and did a speed art critique day. The flower project that I made started off as a single flower in the middle made with colored pencil and I soon lost interest in it. With the collaboration of my class they motivated me to keep with it and the finished project came out 3 separate flowers and 5 different mediums. I used colored pencil, water color, oil pastel, charcoal, and a 4B pencil to finish it and learned many new skills in the process. The final piece I worked on was the night sky one. For this I used a reference picture and tried to recreate it. I’m not very happy on the final piece because I tried taking risks when mixing colors and didn’t feel as if they had blended enough. When I was reflecting on my piece with another classmate we both came to the conclusion that the way to solve this problem would be to add more darker blues and blacks to blend the colors better. During this topic I learned many new skills. When we began this discussion we learned about the Guerilla Girls and how they communicate and express themselves through their work in a different way than mosts other. The Guerilla Girls are a worldwide known group of artists known for complaining about art and the discrimination against women artists For this topic we made a complaint piece and without words expressed it through our artwork. I create an original piece of work for this and for my complaint it was having too much homework. I stacked pieces of paper on a board and put a pencil through it with a paper that said “help” on it. During this we came upon a few problems. We weren’t sure how to keep all the papers together and keep the pencil in the middle, we were able to solve it by keeps and nail in the middle of the papers and breaking the pencil to put on top. I was able to develop skills and took as risk in this because I used a new material to complete it. To put the hole in the papers we used an electric drill and I had never used one before for an art project. After we had finished our project we all collaborated and went around the room observing the work and giving each other tips on whether the project was finished or if they should add something else. The next project that we worked on was never see never will. For my project I used ink and watercolor and painted an earth and had fingers holding it up by a string and a lamp in the corner that represented the sun. After I finished all my work I reflected on it and discussed with my classmates and asked if I needed anything more to finish it. I really enjoyed doing these two projects because we had a lot of independence and could create and interpret it the way we wanted.
With another year of art ahead of me we’ve already jumped into some new assignments. So far we have had a task party, summer work review and a collaborative mural. During the task party we worked in partners and we had to communicate well together to find out what we wanted to create. The task that we were given was “create something blue”, we discussed for a few minutes and looked through the materials and concliuded on creating an original piece of art and made a jelly fish that was blue. We used blue paper to made a somewhat spherical top and then used blue stings for the stingers. We ran into a problem about how to keep the blue paper on the top of it without seeing the tape, we solved the problem by using blue tissue paper and stapling it on. After the task party we observed everyone’s AP art work and talked with each other and left notes about what we liked and what they could fix about their piece. We were then able to all come together to reflect and talk about what we saw. The last project we have worked on so far is a collaborative mural. We all worked on one part of a mural then we put them all together to create the bigger image. I was able to develop skills and learned how to do blending with a tortillion, with this I took risks because I wasn’t sure how to use it yet and it might not have blended well. Our class used global awareness in this project because of whose artwork we created. We enlarged the painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso who is a well known artist all around the world. I have really enjoyed the projects we have done so far and I can't wait to see what we do next.
To create these projects I learned that there are more to colors than what meets the eye. To create shadows we used different shades of blues and to crates highlights we used yellow, which is something that i would not have thought of prior to this project. Both of these projects used the techniques Trompe L’oeil. This is when something appears to be 3D when it is really just drawn. For the notebook paper project we had to look at a piece of paper that had been crumpled up and draw the shadows using the blue for the cooler colors that were the shadows and the yellow for the warm spots that we highlighted. For the candy bar drawing we had layer many unexpected colors onto each other to make it look 3D and also to really over exaggerate the other colors. For example even though I drew a Hershey's bar that had a brown wrapper I added in some purple to bring out the dark brown in the shadow. For our pottery unit I made a pinch pot, a coil pot, a bowl for empty bowls, a fall tray and for my independent project I made three coasters. For my pinch pot I was given slab of clay and I had to form it into a ball and then slowly and lightly press in the middle of the ball and create a hole untill I created a bowl figure. At this stage i have to be very careful with it because it is drying and and can crack and is loosing its elasticity and can make the bowl not look smooth. Next I used a stamp and made texture in my pinch pot by adding the impression of a frog. Once I had finished this I had to let my project dry overnight and then the next day when I came back the pinch pot would be leather hard and I could carve the edges or shave off any sharp or bumpy edges. After I have finished my final touches I have to let it dry even more, so that it becomes bone dry, this is the state in which the clay is most fragile. Once my project has becomes bone dry it is also known as greenware because it is ready to go in the kiln. After firing my projects they were now known as bisque pottery and is now ready to be glazed.
